Shimla – (Jan. 12) The Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh Jai Ram Thakur Saturday tasted first victory with BJP corporator Meera Sharma winning Sangti ward bye-poll (reserved for women) under the Shimla Municipal corporation which had fallen vacant with resignation of same candidate, then representing the Congress Party.
The BJP councillor Meera defeated her nearest rival Shilpa Chauhan of Congress Party by a thin margin of 44 votes only. BJP polled 622 votes, Congress polled 578 and the CPM stood third polling 488 votes in the election held today. Many important leaders of Shimla district BJP including Suresh Bhardwaj, Narender Bragta and Balbir Verma (Bittu) had been campaigning in the ward for the last two weeks, making it a prestige issue for the government as it was the first electoral battle for the present CM Jai Ram Thakur.
Meera Sharma is a new breed of politician who has changed three political parties in the Shimla Corporation election beginning with CPM, then joining Congress and at last aligning with the ruling BJP and she won all three times irrespective of the parties.
